の and ノ

Pronunciation

“NO” sound in "Note".

の Memorization Story

The combination of the hiragana and katakana looks, to me, like Princess Leah saying NO to Han Solo. Her upheld arm being the katakana.

When I learned this, I just imagined it like a small N, with the o inside of it, giving us the word “no”

ノ Memorization Story

An alternative for the katakana ノ is the kanji character called ノ from our series on KANJI. This cute little guy…

You can also imagine the katakana as the first PART of the hiragana の stroke.

Writing

The hiragana の will look best if you cut sharply to the left at the end of the down stroke, just like we did with お and ぬ. Also, make sure that the CENTER of the loop is just around the start of the initial vertical line.

Don’t forget that the katakana is drawn by pulling down from top to bottom.
