と and ト

Pronunciation

"TO" sound in "Toe" but shorter.

と Memorization Story

The hiragana と looks like a TOE with a splinter sticking out the top.

ト Memorization Story

When you pull it out, after some extreme pain, you find that the splinter looks a LOT like the KATAKANA ト, thus why it was so hard to pull out.

Writing

Making the first line in the hiragana と nearly vertical will help make it look nice.

ええと

ummm...

You may be wondering why ええと is written with 2 え's instead of えいと. Well, you can extend a single え sound with an extra え in some cases as well. Especially when the word is only written in hiragana.

Historical Form

Hiragana
止→と

HISTORICAL VERSION

Interestingly, this kanji means stop, but when this kanji appears as a part in OTHER kanji it means FOOTPRINT. Which connects nicely to our English word “toe”.
